The rural basic income system aims to improve the quality of life for residents in rural areas facing the risk of depopulation by providing a basic income of 150,000 won per month, while also revitalizing the local economy.
The government plans to select about six counties out of 69 designated depopulation areas nationwide through a public competition, and operate the pilot program for two years starting in 2026.
Yeoncheon County has already demonstrated strong determination to be selected for this pilot project, leveraging its experience and achievements from previously implementing a rural basic income pilot program.
The county is distributing and collecting signature forms through administrative welfare centers in towns and villages and local village heads, while also expanding participation through online promotion and cooperation with farmers' organizations and social groups.
Yeoncheon County plans to compile the results of this signature campaign and submit them to Gyeonggi Province and the central government, and will actively respond to future policy competitions as well.
Kim Deokhyun, the governor of Yeoncheon County, emphasized, "The rural basic income system is an important policy that can help overcome the difficulties faced by agriculture and rural communities, and address the crisis of regional extinction. I ask for the active interest and participation of all county residents, as each signature will serve as a foundation for Yeoncheon County to be selected as a pilot project site."
