RSV Preventive Antibody Injections Begin for Infants Under 12 Months

SK Bioscience announced on October 2 that, with the start of the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) season, the administration of preventive antibody injections has officially begun. The eligible recipients are newborns and infants under 12 months experiencing their first RSV season, as well as children under 24 months who are at high risk of severe RSV disease during their second RSV season. Following the first domestic administration in February this year, full-scale vaccinations are now underway at hospitals and clinics across the country as Korea enters its second RSV season.

RSV is a common respiratory virus that infects about 90% of infants and toddlers under the age of two, and is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in this age group. It can cause lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Prevention is particularly important because infection during the first year of life can result in slower recovery and an increased risk of developing asthma later on.

Domestic experts continue to emphasize the importance of RSV prevention. Koo Gyodang, director of Bandi Pediatrics and Adolescent Clinic in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, stated, "RSV is an infectious disease that can have serious effects on newborns, so prevention is of utmost importance." He added, "Many parents of infants and young children, as well as the general public, are not well informed about the disease and preventive antibody injections, so active guidance and promotion from the government and related organizations are necessary."

In Korea, SK Bioscience is responsible for the sales and distribution of the RSV preventive antibody injection approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The RSV preventive antibody injection can be administered to infants experiencing their first RSV season and provides protection for at least five months with a single dose. This means that one injection can cover the entire autumn and winter RSV season. In addition, children under 24 months who are at high risk of severe RSV disease during their second RSV season are also eligible for the injection.
