Pocheon City in Gyeonggi Province has finally ushered in the long-awaited era of railways for its citizens.

On October 1, Pocheon City (Mayor Baek Younghyun) held the "Pocheon City Railway Era Opening Ceremony" (subtitled: Connecting Pocheon's Tomorrow (Rail) with Citizens) and a safety prayer ceremony for the Okjeong-Pocheon Metropolitan Railway Construction Project near the Soheul-eup Administrative Welfare Center.
This event commemorated the historic moment when a metropolitan railway is being introduced to Pocheon City for the first time, marking the beginning of a new era in transportation.
The ceremony was attended by Mayor Baek Younghyun, National Assemblyman Kim Yongtae, city and provincial council members, and local citizens, who gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the railway.
The opening ceremony, which began with a performance by the Pocheon City Arts Troupe, was held in two parts. In the first part, the progress and future plans for the Okjeong-Pocheon Metropolitan Railway were presented. The subsequent welcome ceremony highlighted that this project represents a new leap forward for future generations.
The second part featured a safety prayer ceremony hosted by the construction companies Taeyoung Construction, DL Construction, and Geukdong Construction, wishing for the safety of the project and its successful completion.
The Okjeong-Pocheon Metropolitan Railway will connect with the Dobongsan-Okjeong section of Seoul Subway Line 7 and will be built as a 16.9-kilometer double-track electric railway extending to Gunnae-myeon, Pocheon. The total project cost is 1.4874 trillion won, with Pocheon City responsible for 10 percent, or 150 billion won, and jointly handling land compensation and other tasks. The target completion date is the end of 2030. Currently, all construction sections have commenced, and compensation procedures are underway.
Pocheon City expects that the opening of the railway will significantly improve transportation accessibility, attract businesses and talent, revitalize the local economy, and promote overall social and cultural development.

Citizens who attended the groundbreaking ceremony also expressed their support, saying, "Commuting times will be shortened, making daily life much more convenient."
Mayor Baek Younghyun stated, "The opening of the railway is a long-cherished wish of Pocheon City and a historic event that will bring about a transformative change. Now that the metropolitan railway construction is in full swing, we will do our utmost to establish connected railway networks, including the new Deokjeong-Okjeong Line and the attraction of the GTX-G line."
