Global Sales Up 8% Year-on-Year
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia recorded global sales of 640,000 units in September, continuing their record-breaking streak. The significant increase in sales was driven by the base effect from last year's Chuseok holiday and robust sales of flagship recreational vehicle (RV) models.
According to industry sources on October 1, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia sold a total of 640,536 vehicles globally in September, marking an increase of about 8% compared to the same period last year (593,577 units).
In September, Hyundai Motor Company sold a total of 372,298 vehicles worldwide, including 66,001 units domestically and 306,297 units overseas. Domestic sales grew by 18.3% compared to September last year, while overseas sales increased by 6.4% over the same period. As a result, total sales in September rose by 8.3% year-on-year.
Flagship RV models such as the Palisade, Santa Fe, and Tucson led domestic sales. In addition, sedan models like the Avante and Grandeur also contributed to the increase in sales.
In September, Hyundai Motor Company's sedan sales in Korea included 5,398 units of the Grandeur, 4,787 units of the Sonata, and 7,675 units of the Avante, totaling 18,517 units. During the same period, RV sales reached 26,475 units, including 4,070 units of the Palisade, 5,763 units of the Santa Fe, and 5,130 units of the Tucson.
The luxury brand Genesis sold 9,538 units domestically in September, including 3,354 units of the G80, 2,564 units of the GV80, and 2,791 units of the GV70.
Notably, the Tucson, Hyundai Motor Company's compact SUV, surpassed cumulative sales of 10 million units in 21 years since its launch. It is the third Hyundai Motor Group model to achieve this milestone, following the Avante and Accent, and the first SUV to do so.
Since its initial launch in March 2004, cumulative sales of the Tucson reached 10,008,573 units as of August this year. The Tucson first surpassed 1 million cumulative sales in 2008, reached 5 million in 2016, and exceeded 10 million in just nine years after that.
Kia sold a total of 268,238 vehicles globally in September, including 49,001 units domestically, 218,782 units overseas, and 455 special-purpose vehicles. The overall sales growth rate was 7.3% year-on-year, with domestic sales up 28.5% and overseas sales up 3.7%.
The top three global bestsellers for Kia were all RVs. The Sportage led with 49,588 units sold globally in September, followed by the Seltos with 27,052 units and the Sorento with 20,393 units. The Sorento was also the best-selling model for Kia in Korea in September, with 8,978 units sold.
A Kia official stated, "Sales increased due to the base effect from the Chuseok holiday, and strong sales continued for global eco-friendly vehicles such as SUV hybrid models, EV3, and EV4. We plan to continue this growth momentum by expanding our electric vehicle lineup, including EV4, EV5, and PV5."
