Calls are growing for Oh Taewan, the governor of Uiryeong County in South Gyeongsang Province, to voluntarily step down after he was sentenced to a fine of 10 million won by the Supreme Court and to eight months in prison with a two-year suspended sentence by the district court for charges of forcible molestation and false accusation involving a female reporter covering the county office. He is currently awaiting an appellate trial.
On September 30, Reporter A, who covers the county office, held a one-person protest at Jungang Intersection in Uiryeong, South Gyeongsang Province, demanding Governor Oh's resignation. The one-person protest has continued for three days, moving between the county office and downtown Uiryeong.
This reporter, who also serves as an advisory committee member for a local civic group, was the person responsible for the arrest of former and incumbent Uiryeong governors Oh Youngho and Lee Seondu in 2020-the first time in constitutional history-on charges such as violations of the Political Funds Act.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that a local civic group plans to hold a press conference in front of the Changwon District Court on October 2, ahead of Governor Oh's appellate trial, to call for stern punishment against him.
