On September 29, members of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council issued a statement titled "Demanding Immediate Apology and Disciplinary Action from Assemblywoman Kim Jungjae and Condemning the People Power Party as a Factory of Reckless Remarks."
On September 25, immediately after the vote on the "Special Act for Relief and Support for the Victims of the Massive Wildfires in Gyeongnam and Ulsan" at the National Assembly plenary session, Kim Jungjae, a member of the People Power Party, made the remark, "Don't wildfires ever happen in Honam?"
This comment mocked the pain of residents suffering from the massive wildfire damage and incited regionalism, leaving a deep wound in the hearts of the people of Honam.
In response, members of the Seo-gu Council called for an immediate apology and disciplinary action against Kim Jungjae, and issued a statement condemning the People Power Party for repeatedly making reckless remarks.
Ko Kyungae, the council member who sponsored the statement, said, "Honam is a region that has protected democracy and the spirit of community through the May 18 Democratization Movement. We can no longer stand by as the values of Honam are mocked and national unity is destroyed by this assembly member's actions. We demand an immediate apology and disciplinary action, and strongly condemn the People Power Party as a factory of reckless remarks."
