Trump Steps Up Attacks on Mamdani via Social Media
"Communist Ideology Has Always Failed"
On September 29 (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, a New York State Assemblyman who is considered the frontrunner in the upcoming New York City mayoral election in November, calling him a "Communist" and warning that he would not provide federal funding if Mamdani is elected.
On his own social networking service, Truth Social, President Trump stated, "Zohran Mamdani, the self-proclaimed New York City Communist running for mayor, will prove to be one of the greatest assets that could ever happen to our great Republican Party." He added, "He will have more problems with Washington than any mayor in the history of our once-great city."
He went on to say, "Remember, he will need money from me, the President, to fulfill his fake Communist promises, but he will get nothing." Trump further questioned, "So what is the point of voting for him?" and emphasized, "This (Communist) ideology has always failed for thousands of years and will fail again. That is certain!"
Mamdani, whom President Trump is trying to keep in check, is an Indian Muslim and has become a sensation in this election. In June, he defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary to secure the party's nomination and has since maintained a commanding lead in various opinion polls. However, concerns have been raised that his populist pledges-such as freezing rents, doubling the minimum wage, introducing a wealth tax, and providing free bus service and childcare-could worsen New York City's finances and lead to an exodus of businesses if implemented.
In response, President Trump is pressuring other candidates to withdraw in order to prevent Mamdani's election and is attempting to set up a head-to-head race with former Governor Cuomo. During this process, current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who was running as an independent, announced his withdrawal from the race the previous day. President Trump has also called on Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate from his own party, to drop out of the race.
