On September 29, Jeonnam Province announced that it had completed consultations with relevant ministries and administrative procedures for the 'Gwangyang Gubongsan Tourist Complex Development Project' and approved it as a new tourist complex.
The Gubongsan Tourist Complex will be developed as an urban stay-type tourist destination harmonizing with nature, with 370 billion won in private capital invested in an area of approximately 2.07 million square meters around Gubongsan in Gwangyang.
The main facilities of the complex will include accommodations such as a condominium with 220 rooms, a 27-hole golf course, extreme sports facilities such as a rolling zipline and a non-powered monorail, and a variety of leisure and cultural content facilities utilizing the Gubongsan forest, such as a scenic lighting trail. It is expected to become a new tourist attraction in the southern coastal region, offering unique experiences to both local residents and domestic and international tourists.
Jeonnam Province believes that this project will serve as an opportunity to elevate Gwangyang from an industrial city known for steel and ports to an attractive city where tourism and culture thrive together. In particular, as a new hub of the southern coastal tourism belt, it is expected to create significant synergy in revitalizing tourism in the eastern region by connecting with nearby tourist destinations such as Suncheon and Yeosu.
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, stated, "I hope that the designation of the Gubongsan Tourist Complex will enable Gwangyang to make a strong leap forward as a new tourism hub in the southern coastal region. We will actively support the project so that it proceeds smoothly and becomes a driving force for regional development and tourism revitalization."
Following the designation approval, the Gwangyang Gubongsan Tourist Complex will go through administrative procedures, with construction scheduled to begin at the end of November and completion targeted for 2030.
