7 Out of 10 Industrial Complexes in Korea Lack Hospitals and Pharmacies

It has been found that 7 out of 10 industrial complexes in South Korea lack essential amenities such as hospitals or pharmacies.

According to data submitted by Jinwook Jung, member of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Gwangju Dongnam-gap), from Korea Industrial Complex Corporation for the National Assembly audit on September 29, out of a total of 82 industrial complexes nationwide, 72 complexes (87.8%) did not have a hospital within knowledge industry centers or support facility zones designated under the Act on the Promotion of the Cluster of Industries.

There were 62 complexes (75.6%) without a pharmacy, and 61 complexes (74.4%) did not even have a clinic, which is smaller in scale than a hospital.

Childcare and cultural facilities were also mostly absent. Among the 82 complexes, 79 (96.3%) did not have a movie theater, 75 (91.5%) did not have a cultural center, and 57 (69.5%) did not have a daycare center.

Jinwook Jung stated, "If industrial complexes are to serve as hubs for job creation and economic growth, a minimum living infrastructure must be established to ensure the quality of life for workers and their families." He added, "The government and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation should actively work to expand customized social overhead capital (SOC), taking into account the differences by type and region of each industrial complex."
