Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) has announced a transition to the era of "smart railways" powered by artificial intelligence (AI) through a company-wide organizational restructuring.

KORAIL Accelerates AI Transformation... Considering Integrated SRT and KTX Ticket Reservations Yonhap News

On September 28, KORAIL stated that, effective October 1, it will expand and reorganize its existing "Digital Convergence Headquarters" into the "AI Strategy Headquarters" and establish a dedicated system to accelerate AI transformation (AX) across the entire railway industry.

The newly established AI Strategy Headquarters will consist of the "AX Planning Office," which designs AI-based railway innovations; the "ICT Operations Office," which applies AI to public-facing services such as the mobile app "KORAIL Talk"; and the "AI Innovation Office," which is responsible for railway safety and improving internal work efficiency.

The core goal of this organizational restructuring is to embed AI technology throughout the entire railway system. In the area of safety, the company will integrate the management of risk prediction and equipment diagnostics. In customer service, KORAIL plans to further advance its offerings based on its AI chatbot, which has surpassed 1 million accumulated uses.

In particular, through this restructuring, KORAIL aims to enhance its real-time data-based reservation and ticketing system, strengthening its capability to manage ticket reservations for all major routes, including SRT. This is expected to contribute to the stabilization of SR’s information system-which relies heavily on KORAIL’s data-and to enhance the public value of the railway sector.

Furthermore, in line with the government’s policy to integrate high-speed railways (KTX and SRT), KORAIL is also considering enabling SRT ticket reservations through KORAIL Talk in the long term.

Jung Jungrae, acting president of KORAIL, stated, "The launch of the AI Strategy Headquarters marks a turning point toward a smart railway based on data and AI," adding, "We will maximize the safety and efficiency of railway operations and achieve customer service innovations that the public can truly experience."
