Strengthening ESG Capabilities of Local Companies Expected
The ESG Report Verifier Professional Qualification Course has been launched in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, marking a new chapter in the training of professionals to support ESG management.
This program is hosted by the Carbon Neutral Technology Institute and sponsored by North Gyeongsang Province, Gumi City, Gumi Electronics & Information Technology Institute, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, and Keimyung University. It is significant in that it aims to systematically foster report verification experts in line with global ESG standards, based on strong support at the regional level.
ESG Report Verifier Qualification Course... Launching Customized Talent Development for Industry Sites
The qualification course consists of a basic course (covering ESG concepts and understanding global disclosure standards such as GRI, ISSB, and K-ESG), an advanced course (focusing on report preparation and verification processes, data reliability verification, and stakeholder communication), and a practical course (case studies and field training using actual ESG reports from local companies).
Graduates who pass the examination will be awarded a private certification as an "ESG Report Verifier." Notably, the program features a combination of online and offline education as well as customized corporate consulting programs, reflecting industry demand.
The Carbon Neutral Technology Institute grants the qualification after a review by the Expert Certification Committee. The committee includes experts from academia, industry, and public institutions, applying internationally recognized verification standards. In the future, the institute plans to enhance the credibility of the qualification by linking it with international certification bodies.
More than 3,000 companies in electronics, materials, and automotive parts are located in major industrial complexes in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, including the Gumi National Industrial Complex. As global supply chains increasingly require ESG report submissions, medium-sized and small businesses are struggling to build the necessary response capabilities.
According to a survey conducted this year by the Gumi Electronics & Information Technology Institute, 62% of local companies cited a shortage of professionals specializing in ESG report preparation and verification as a major challenge. In addition, more than half of the respondent companies said they expect a positive effect on expanding global business partners if they secure ESG verification experts.
North Gyeongsang Province and Gumi City expect that this program will help local companies reduce the costs of report reliability verification while simultaneously enhancing their international investment and export competitiveness.
Universities will be responsible for supplying professionals through education and research, while the institute will support practical application in the field, creating a virtuous cycle structure.
A representative from the Carbon Neutral Technology Institute stated, "By building an ESG verification talent pool centered in Gumi, we can promote the adoption of ESG management not only for local companies but also for small and medium-sized enterprises nationwide. In the long term, we aim to develop it into an internationally recognized ESG professional qualification system."
ESG is no longer the exclusive domain of large corporations. This qualification course, which originated in Gumi, stands out as a "local company-friendly ESG education and verification ecosystem." Given its role in helping small businesses keep pace with global ESG trends, there is a strong possibility that it will spread nationwide in the future.
