The Fruits of Brain Health Classes
A Healthy Old Age Fostered by Lifelong Learning
Bonghwa County has demonstrated the effectiveness of lifelong learning through abacus education. On the 25th, the county announced that it received the Excellence Award in the team competition at the 5th Gyeongsangbuk-do Senior Abacus Competition, which was held at GumiCo in Gumi City on the 23rd.

This competition was hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and organized by the Gyeongbuk Lifelong Education Leaders Association, with more than 300 participants, including representative teams of seniors aged 70 and above and volunteers from across the province.
Bonghwa County selected 10 outstanding individuals who had demonstrated exceptional skills at the 2nd Bonghwa County Senior Abacus Competition held earlier this month to represent the county. In addition, seven members of the Bonghwa County Lifelong Education Leaders Association served as judges, adding further significance to the event.
Notably, Bonghwa County has been running the "Brain Health Abacus Class" at 10 senior centers across its towns and townships this year, supporting both improved cognitive health and increased social participation among the elderly. The county attributes this achievement to its consistent learning activities.
Kim Kyungsuk, Director of Education and Family at Bonghwa County, stated, "We will continue to develop a wider variety of programs so that seniors can maintain their health and lead vibrant lives through lifelong learning."
She added, "Abacus education is more than simple arithmetic; it is a leading learning method for improving memory and concentration, thereby enhancing the quality of life for the elderly. Bonghwa County's recent achievement demonstrates that lifelong learning is also a form of health and welfare, and there is a strong possibility that such initiatives will expand throughout the region in the future."
