Concentration of Projects in Cheoin-gu, Where Semiconductor Complexes Are Being Built
Boosting Industrial Competitiveness and Improving Transportation Convenience Expected
An area of 591.2 square kilometers in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province-almost the size of Seoul-is undergoing a dramatic transformation. As large-scale industrial complexes, including semiconductor clusters, are being developed one after another, a series of road network construction projects are also underway to connect these sites.
According to the Yongin city government, on September 25, the expanded section of Local Road No. 321, which connects Maesan Intersection in Mohyeon-eup, Cheoin-gu and Chuja Intersection in Chuja-dong, Gwangju, spanning 2.3 kilometers, has opened to traffic. This road expansion was carried out to accommodate the increasing traffic demand caused by the construction of the SK Hynix production line in the Wonsam-myeon area of Cheoin-gu, where the "Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex" is being built.
In addition to this road, a total of 14 road construction and expansion projects are currently underway throughout Yongin, including three national highways, five national support roads, and six local roads. Notably, most of these projects are concentrated in the Cheoin-gu area.
The section of National Highway No. 17 between Pyeongchang Intersection and Yangji Intersection is being expanded from four lanes to six lanes. The design was completed this year, and the project aims for completion by 2030.
The 12.5-kilometer section of National Highway No. 45 between Daechon Intersection and Jangseo Intersection is also being expanded from four lanes to eight lanes. In particular, this project was exempted from the preliminary feasibility study because it is considered a key project connecting to the Idong and Namsa Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex. The road construction is being carried out with the goal of completing the section within the national industrial complex by 2030.
In connection with the Giheung-gu Platform City development project, an undergrounding project for National Highway No. 43 is also underway, running from near Suji District Office to Jukjeon Station.
National support road projects are also progressing. The Yongin-Gwangju section of National Support Road No. 57, promoted by Gyeonggi Province as a private investment project, completed its strategic environmental impact assessment this year and is scheduled for a third-party announcement next year. For National Support Road No. 82, the section between Jangji Interchange and the semiconductor industrial complex, the plan has shifted from partial expansion to a full four-lane expansion.
The construction of National Support Road No. 84 between Jungri Interchange and Woncheon Intersection is scheduled for completion by the end of next year, while the alignment improvement for the Jeongsuri Gogae section of National Support Road No. 98 will be completed by May next year. In addition, an undergrounding project for National Support Road No. 23, connecting the Shingal-dong Driver's License Test Center and Bojeong-dong Samsung Renault Automobile Samgeori, is also in progress as part of the Platform City project.
New projects are also expected to follow. This is because five projects requested by the city have been included in the "6th National Highway and National Support Road Construction Plan" currently being developed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and are undergoing preliminary feasibility studies. The projects under review are: the construction of a bypass for National Highway No. 42 between Namdong and Yangji-myeon; the expansion of National Support Road No. 98 from Gorim-dong to Docheok-dong in Gwangju; the construction of a new section of National Support Road No. 84 between Idong-eup and Wonsam-myeon; the expansion of National Support Road No. 57 from Wonsam-myeon to Mapyeong-dong; and the expansion of National Support Road No. 82 from Songjeon-ri to Myobong-ri in Idong-eup.
Additionally, the city is expanding local roads, including the construction of an underpass on Local Road No. 315 between Bora-dong and Hagal-dong; the expansion of Local Road No. 321 in the Bongmyeong-Ahgok, Yuun-Maesan, and Wanjang-Seori sections; and the expansion of Local Road No. 318 in the Wonsam area. Besides these, the city has requested a review for the construction or expansion of a total of 11 local roads in the "4th Gyeonggi Province Road Construction Plan."
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, stated, "Expanding the road network will improve transportation convenience for citizens and enhance conditions for companies moving in," adding, "We will continue our efforts to expand transportation infrastructure, including roads, so that Yongin can grow as a global hub for semiconductors."
