Coupang’s delivery subsidiary, Coupang Logistics Service (CLS), signed an investment agreement with Daegu City for the construction of a new smart logistics center at Daegu City Hall the previous day. The Daegu Smart Logistics Center, scheduled to begin operations in November, will be built in Suseong Alpha City, Daehung-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu, with an investment of approximately 61.8 billion won. The facility will have a total floor area of 75,000 square meters (about 22,700 pyeong).
Through this investment, Coupang expects to revitalize the local economy of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, expand the coverage area of its Rocket Delivery service, and dramatically improve delivery speed and efficiency. Specifically, the company plans to create about 800 new jobs, with a priority on hiring Daegu citizens during the recruitment process.
The Daegu Smart Logistics Center will be operated as a logistics infrastructure that combines a warehouse and delivery hub, and will also be equipped with advanced automation facilities. Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI)-based demand forecasting, which is a core technology of Coupang Rocket Delivery, the center will manage high-frequency items closer to customers, ensuring efficient inventory management.
This investment is also expected to contribute to the mutual growth of local small business owners. Through Coupang’s nationwide logistics network, products from local producers and small and medium-sized enterprises will gain access to markets across the country, which the company believes will help reduce distribution costs and increase sales in a tangible way.
Hong Yongjun, CEO of CLS, stated, “Through this investment in the Daegu Smart Logistics Center, we will contribute to the economy of the Daegu and North Gyeongsang region and provide better services to our customers.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to grow together with local small business owners through close cooperation with Daegu City.”
