Strong Call for Robust Legal Action by Jeonnam Province
Shin Euijun, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party of Korea, Wando District 2), strongly criticized the jurisdictional dispute over Sasudo Island and the forced push for the Chujado offshore wind power project, urging a robust legal and administrative response from Jeonnam Province, according to an announcement on the 24th.
Assemblyman Shin made these remarks during a recent provincial government inquiry at the 393rd extraordinary session. Earlier, on the 4th, Wando fishermen staged a maritime protest with around 50 vessels, including fishing and leisure boats, near Sasudo Island, and installed a boundary stone inscribed with the message, "The waters in front of Sasudo belong to Wando County's maritime territory."
Assemblyman Shin stated, "This maritime protest is not a simple act of dissent, but a demonstration of the strong determination of the residents," adding, "It is an action that encapsulates deep concern and anger over Jeju Energy Corporation's rush to reissue the call for bids for the offshore wind power complex."
He emphasized, "The waters around Sasudo Island are a vital area that sustains the livelihoods of fishermen and the local community, as well as a symbol of Jeonnam Province's maritime sovereignty. Rushing to designate these disputed waters as a project zone and proceeding with the initial and renewed calls for bids undermines both procedural legitimacy and legal appropriateness."
Assemblyman Shin further stressed, "The waters near Sasudo Island are a precious legacy we must pass down to future generations in our region. Advancing any project in this disputed area is a provocation against the residents, and not a single step should be allowed before the Constitutional Court's final decision."
He continued, "We need more than empty promises. We must establish a close cooperative system with the coastal cities and counties, especially Wando County, and take immediate action," urging Jeonnam Province to respond proactively.
In response, Park Youngchae, Director of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for Jeonnam Province, stated, "Jeonnam Province, along with Wando and Jindo Counties, has sent an official letter to Jeju Province and Jeju Energy Corporation, requesting the suspension of the bidding process until the Constitutional Court's final ruling. The province also plans to jointly file a competence dispute petition against Jeju Province with Wando County next month."
