Applying Insights to Banghari Tourism Site Development
Addressing Limitations of Stay-Type Tourism
Aiming to Complete Permits by Next Year Based on Visit Outcomes
The Chuncheon city delegation, which visited Europe to promote a 'Chuncheon-style' sustainable tourism model, is working to further refine its vision. On the 23rd local time, Yook Donghan, mayor of Chuncheon, and the Chuncheon delegation visited Villa del Grumello, located in Como city by Lake Como, Italy, to observe examples of cultural and tourism resource management that combine waterfront scenery and gardens, and explored ways to apply these ideas to the development of the Banghari tourism site.

Villa del Grumello is a historic mansion built in the 16th century as a summer residence for a banker. After passing through several noble families, it has now been restored and operates as a cultural and scenic space enjoyed by both citizens and tourists.
The expansive gardens and walking trails, featuring ancient trees and a botanical garden, are connected to the Lake Como promenade, making it a leading tourism model that combines waterfront scenery with nature experiences. The interior of the garden serves as a multi-purpose cultural space for exhibitions, academic events, and cultural programs, demonstrating an operational approach where tourism and local culture develop together.
Through this on-site study, Chuncheon City thoroughly reviewed ways to apply these insights to the Banghari tourism development project. The city plans to incorporate an operational model that combines nature, gardens, and multi-purpose culture, as seen in the Grumello example, to overcome the limitations of stay-type tourism and develop Chuncheon into an eco-friendly, garden-style tourism city that can be enjoyed by both citizens and visitors.
The 'Banghari Tourism Site' will feature differentiated multi-purpose content, including a waterfront experience facility, themed accommodations, cultural alley-style commercial areas, and a floating stage, centered around a dock that directly connects Nami Island and Chuncheon. Ultimately, under the concept of 'Fall in Love with Banghari,' the project aims to attract 760,000 visitors annually by 2035, with a total project cost of approximately 7.4 billion won. The development will also include a parking lot with 515 spaces, 15 pension-style pool villas, and 4,900 square meters of commercial facilities.
Based on the insights gained from this visit to Como, the city plans to proceed with administrative procedures, complete all related permits and approvals by next year, and gradually implement infrastructure construction and attract private investment.
A Chuncheon city official stated, "Villa del Grumello is a representative sustainable tourism model that combines gardens, culture, and waterfront scenery," adding, "Chuncheon also plans to incorporate such examples into the Banghari tourism site to develop into an eco-friendly waterfront tourism city that both citizens and visitors can truly experience."
