and Join the United Will of the International Community"
On September 23 (local time), President Lee Jaemyung stated in his keynote speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly that we must actively respond to the changes driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and lay the foundation for innovation and prosperity. He announced that at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Gyeongju at the end of October, he would share a vision for the future of AI through the 'APEC AI Initiative.' He also pledged to strengthen solidarity in addressing global challenges related to the climate crisis, energy transition, and marine development.
President Lee, who was the seventh keynote speaker at the high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly held at the UN Headquarters in New York, emphasized that in an era where AI technology determines security capabilities and cyberattacks threaten national security, we must confront not only 'visible enemies' but also 'invisible enemies.' He warned, "If we passively follow the changes of the AI era, we will face a dystopia of deepening polarization and inequality." President Lee stressed, "However, if we actively respond to these changes, we can use high productivity as a driving force to establish a foundation for innovation and prosperity, and create a useful basis for strengthening direct democracy."
He went on to announce plans to share a vision for the future of AI through the 'APEC AI Initiative' at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit to be held in Gyeongju at the end of October. President Lee said, "I will work to ensure that the vision of 'AI for all,' where advances in cutting-edge technology contribute to the universal values of humanity, becomes the 'new normal' of the international community," adding, "Technological innovation led by AI will become an important and new tool for solving global challenges such as the climate crisis." President Lee is also scheduled to discuss the need for international efforts to promote the responsible use of AI at an open debate he will chair as President of the Security Council on September 24.
He also pledged to strengthen solidarity on the climate crisis, energy transition, and marine issues. President Lee said, "We are pursuing an 'energy transition' by utilizing science, technology, and digital innovation to improve energy efficiency and expand the share of renewable energy," and added, "Within this year, we will submit a responsible 'national greenhouse gas reduction target' and join the united will of the international community." He also stated, "At the 'Fourth United Nations Ocean Conference,' which will be co-hosted with Chile in 2028, we will build practical solidarity for sustainable marine development."
President Lee also shared his thoughts on reforming global development governance. Regarding the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global development financing, he said, "We must structurally reform global development governance while also moving to improve the quality of resources," adding, "I believe that we can work together to see more cases like the Republic of Korea, which has grown and leaped from a 'recipient country' to a 'donor country.'"
President Lee stated, "In difficult times, we must return to the founding spirit of the United Nations, which is faith in universal values of humanity," and added, "K-Culture is connecting people around the world, transcending borders, languages, and cultural differences. Toward a new era of peace, coexistence, and shared growth on the Korean Peninsula, and toward the path of 'Better Together,' our Republic of Korea will boldly take the lead."
