"I Take Responsibility... Will Be More Cautious with My Words and Actions"
Quoting a Proverb to an Audience Member During Pre-Show Performance
Musical actor Hong Sungwon, who has faced controversy over remarks deemed demeaning to women, has posted an apology.
On September 22, Hong Sungwon bowed his head and wrote on his personal Instagram account, "I sincerely apologize for causing discomfort with my inappropriate remarks during the pre-show of the musical 'Burn the Witch.'"
He went on to say, "I take full responsibility for disappointing the audience and my colleagues," and added, "I will be much more cautious with my words and actions in the future."
On September 20, Hong Sungwon took part in the pre-show performance of the musical 'Burn the Witch' at the Hongik University Daehakro Art Center in Seoul. During the event, he reportedly told an audience member, "There is a saying that if a hen crows, the household will fall apart. Please play the role of the hen." While the original meaning of this proverb was "If a man does not fulfill his role, the household will fall apart," it is now commonly interpreted as a demeaning expression toward women.
As accounts of the event spread through online communities, criticism grew over the sexist nature of the remark, ultimately prompting Hong Sungwon to issue a direct statement.
Meanwhile, Hong Sungwon made his stage debut in 2019 as part of the ensemble in the musical 'Excalibur.' Since then, he has appeared in various productions such as 'Oz,' 'Clover,' and 'Time of Dogs and Cats,' gaining recognition from the public. In June, he also played the role of Kim Taei in the tvN drama 'Unknown Seoul.'
