Goseong County in Gangwon Province (Governor Ham Myungjun) will present the original play "We Are Cleaning" at the Goseong County Culture and Welfare Center (240 Jasancheon-ro, Geojin-eup) on September 26 at 7:30 p.m. and September 27 at 4:00 p.m.
This performance marks the first show by Theater Iryuk, which was selected for the Gangwon Cultural Foundation's "Support Project for Nurturing Performing Arts Troupes" under an agreement with Goseong County. Using the everyday act of "cleaning" as a motif, the play humorously and touchingly explores isolation, disconnection, and the meaning of life in modern society.
Notably, this production is significant as it is Goseong County's first attempt to shift its main audience from children to teenagers. The play addresses universal themes such as alienation, loneliness, neighbors, and community, delivering messages that resonate with young audiences. Goseong County plans to continue expanding cultural opportunities for teenagers by offering performances that appeal to a wide range of generations.
The play tells the stories of residents at Cheongsol Villa. Characters on the margins of society-including a man searching for a missing child, a bar hostess, a mixed-race youth, a North Korean defector, and a girl raised by her grandparents-encounter one another, poetically unraveling issues of loneliness, disconnection, and solitary deaths in Korean society, while also exploring the possibility of solidarity.
A county official stated, "Although this performance may not be flashy, it will deliver a sincere story that touches the hearts of both teenagers and general audiences. We will continue to offer a variety of performances tailored to the characteristics and perspectives of each generation to enhance cultural satisfaction among residents."
This performance is free of charge, and advance reservations can be made through the online ticketing site "Play Ticket." For those who have difficulty booking online, tickets will also be available at the venue, with seats assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
After the performance, there will be a photo event with the cast, offering the audience a special memory.
Detailed reservation instructions can be found on the reservation page, and inquiries regarding the performance should be directed to the Culture and Arts Team of the Education and Culture Division at Goseong County.
