"The Cake Split into Four Pieces by Itself" - How the Owner Responded to the Refund Request

"Claimed it split into four pieces as soon as the band was removed"
Owner: "It looked like it was cut with a knife, but refunded despite unfairness"

A story has been shared about a self-employed business owner who ended up refunding half of the payment to a customer who demanded a refund, claiming that the fruit cake they purchased split into four pieces as soon as the protective film was removed.

"It split as soon as I removed the band" - Absurd Complaint
"The Cake Split into Four Pieces by Itself" - How the Owner Responded to the Refund Request A story of a self-employed person upset because a customer complained that the fruit cake cracked as soon as the protective film was removed has been shared. Community capture

On September 22, a post titled "Can a cake really cut itself like this automatically?" appeared on a community for self-employed people. The author, identified as Mr. A, who runs a cake shop, said that a customer requested express delivery for a cake, which was delivered within 30 minutes. However, he soon received a complaint that "the cake is in a strange condition and cannot be eaten."

The customer sent a photo showing the cake split into four pieces as if it had been cut with a knife, claiming, "This happened as soon as I removed the band." Mr. A responded, "It doesn't make sense," and said, "How could it split with such clean, straight edges? It looks like it was cut with a knife." However, the customer insisted, "How is this straight? It's all caved in." Mr. A also reported that two customers who called to complain gave conflicting explanations, with one saying "It was cut with a knife" and the other claiming "The cake melted and split," and they could not agree on their story.

Resolved with a Half Refund, Flood of Comments from Other Business Owners

In the end, Mr. A said that although he did not believe it was a product defect, he decided to settle the matter by refunding half of the amount. He lamented, "I buy top-quality fruit from the early morning market and use only the best fresh cream, but to be told that the cake is too soft and that I gave them something inedible is really upsetting. It's hard to deal with other customers after something like this."

Other self-employed business owners who read Mr. A's story expressed their anger. One commented, "Anyone can see that the pieces look like they were cut with a knife. That customer probably expected the pieces to come out firm and pretty like a sliced cake, but when it looked like it might collapse, they added a bit of a lie to demand a refund." Other comments included: "It must be really hard to run a business," "Even the fruit cake from Sung Sim Dang is like that; it's normal for a cake with that much fruit to fall apart when cut," "There's no point trying to explain to customers like that," "I've had a similar experience, but I just considered it a loss and moved on," and "From now on, I should notify customers that cakes with lots of fruit may collapse when cut."
