A man who made nearly 60,000 false police reports over the past year, including threats such as "I will kill my brother," has been arrested and detained.
The Seongbuk Police Station in Seoul announced on the 23rd that a man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, was arrested and detained on charges of obstructing official duties through fraudulent means.
Mr. A is accused of making 58,307 false reports over the past year, including claims such as "I am being held captive" and "Someone stole my refrigerator," which resulted in police being dispatched to the scene 51 times.
It was also confirmed that in May, after receiving a notice of violation under the Minor Offenses Act for a false report, Mr. A, dissatisfied with the outcome, made a total of 1,882 reports over a four-day period.
The police requested Mr. A to appear for questioning as a suspect, but when he failed to comply, they obtained an arrest warrant and took him into custody. The police are also considering filing a civil lawsuit against Mr. A for damages.
A police official stated, "False reports to 112 may prevent citizens who truly need police assistance from receiving help," and emphasized, "The 112 emergency number should only be used in genuine emergencies."
