Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Holds Completion Ceremony for Chungnyeongdang and Memorial Hall at Icheon National Cemetery with Capacity for 50,000 Remains

Icheon National Cemetery Expands Enshrinement Capacity to 100,000
Now the Largest in Korea

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced on September 23 that it will hold a completion ceremony for the Chungnyeongdang and Memorial Hall at the Icheon National Cemetery in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, on September 24. The Chungnyeongdang and Memorial Hall are enshrinement facilities with a capacity of 50,000, established with a total project cost of 75.3 billion won, following the full occupancy of the Icheon National Cemetery in 2017.

With the completion of the Chungnyeongdang and Memorial Hall, the Icheon National Cemetery now has the largest enshrinement capacity among the six national cemeteries in Korea, with space for approximately 100,000 enshrined remains. It will provide enshrinement services for patriots and eligible veterans, including those residing in Gyeonggi Province.

The Chungnyeongdang, a three-story building, features a central courtyard to create an open atmosphere. The two-story Memorial Hall includes a joint enshrinement room on the first floor, where ceremonies for about 300 people can be held simultaneously, and an indoor ritual room on the second floor. Additionally, the outdoor area has been developed into themed rest spaces, such as the Mugunghwa Garden.

Approximately 300 people, including Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oeul, National Assemblyman Song Seokjun, and Icheon Mayor Kim Kyeonghee, will attend the completion ceremony.

Minister Kwon stated, "I consider the completion of the Chungnyeongdang and Memorial Hall at the Icheon National Cemetery, which will provide the final honors for patriots and their families in the Gyeonggi region, to be highly meaningful." He added, "The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will strive to ensure that the Icheon National Cemetery not only handles enshrinement work for those who dedicated themselves to the nation, but also faithfully serves to spread the values and significance of honoring veterans to the public through various commemorative events and educational programs."
