Sub-fund Investment Project to Begin in October
Plan to Create 150 Billion Won Venture Fund
The Ministry of SMEs and Startups has completed the recruitment of investors for the Gangwon regional parent fund, which will focus on investments in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and will now begin full-scale operations.
On September 23, the Ministry announced that it held a launch ceremony for the "Gangwon Strategic Industry Venture Fund" at the Sky Convention in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. The event was attended by Lim Jungwook, Director General for Startup and Venture Innovation at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon Province, and other related officials.
The 2025 regional parent funds, which are being promoted to revitalize local venture investment, will be established with a total of 400 billion won across Gangwon, North Gyeongsang, Busan, and South Chungcheong. The Gangwon Strategic Industry Venture Fund is the third parent fund to be established, following those in South Chungcheong and Busan. The Korea Venture Investment Corp. provided 60 billion won as seed capital, while Gangwon Province, seven local governments (Chuncheon, Wonju, Gangneung, Taebaek, Samcheok, Hongcheon, and Hoengseong), and Nonghyup Bank participated as investors, creating a large-scale parent fund totaling 105.6 billion won. Through this, investments in Gangwon-based companies and the seven future industries of Gangwon will be actively pursued.
The Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to finalize the investment sectors through an operations committee in September, and will begin the sub-fund investment project in October, aiming to create a 150 billion won venture fund focused on Gangwon. Lim Jungwook, Director General for Startup and Venture Innovation at the Ministry, stated, "Gangwon is not only the center of Korea's tourism and leisure industry, but also a region with strong growth potential in advanced strategic industries. Through the Gangwon Strategic Industry Venture Fund, we will actively support the seven future industries of Gangwon and its venture startups so that they can seize sufficient growth opportunities and make a significant leap forward."
