Google Maps in 42 countries around the world incorrectly label Dokdo as the "Liancourt Rocks." Professor Seo Kyungduk
There is an urgent need for correction as Google in 42 countries around the world labels Dokdo as the "Liancourt Rocks." Previously, Google Maps sparked major controversy when it incorrectly labeled the "Dokdo Museum" in Ulleung County as the "Kim Il-sung Memorial Hall."
Professor Seo Kyungduk of Sungshin Women's University stated on the 23rd that, in order to find out how Google Maps in different countries labels "Dokdo," he asked his social media followers last weekend to report the names used in their respective countries. As a result, followers from a total of 42 countries-including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, India, Vietnam, Egypt, Tunisia, Argentina, and Brazil-sent in reports, and in all cases, Dokdo was incorrectly labeled as the "Liancourt Rocks."
The view of Google Maps directing to "Tsushima Airport" when searching for "Dokdo Airport." Professor Seo Kyungduk
Professor Seo said, "Three years ago, followers from 26 countries participated in a similar survey, and both then and now, Google Maps continues to use the same incorrect labeling." He pointed out that only in Korea is Dokdo labeled correctly, while in Japan, it is labeled as "Takeshima," in line with Japan's claims. He also noted, "When you search for 'Dokdo Airport' on Google Maps, it directs you to 'Tsushima Airport' in Japan."
Professor Seo criticized, "There is no airport on Dokdo. The fact that there is even an entry for 'Dokdo Airport' is problematic, but it is an even bigger issue that clicking it leads to 'Tsushima Airport.'" He added, "Although we have consistently filed complaints with Google, no corrections have been made. Now, the Korean government must protest strongly and ensure that the labeling is corrected without fail."
