Gwangyang City Finally Selected for Railway Idle Land Utilization Project Contest

Green Light for Transforming Sarasilye Art Village and Wine Cave into Tourism Landmarks

Gwangyang City in South Jeolla Province announced that it has been finally selected in the "Railway Idle Land Utilization Project Contest" implemented by the Korea Rail Network Authority to utilize unused railway sites as regional growth engines.

The Railway Idle Land Utilization Project is an initiative to creatively utilize state-owned railway and closed railway sites that are not directly related to railway transportation, with the aim of strengthening regional competitiveness.

In June, the city proposed the "Gwangyang-eup Media Art and Sarasilye Art Village to Wine Cave Tourism Landmark Project," and after a practical evaluation by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and a feasibility review by the review committee, it was finally selected on the 18th.

With this selection, the city is expected to gain momentum in establishing a media art complex cultural space connecting the Jeonnam Provincial Art Museum and the Gwangyang Art Warehouse, as well as building a tourism network between key attractions in the Gwangyang-eup area, such as Sarasilye Art Village and the Wine Cave, as part of the tourism landmark project.

Under the condition that the tourism facilities built on the idle land will be donated in the future, the city will be able to use the railway site owned by the Korea Rail Network Authority free of charge for up to 20 years, which is expected to save approximately 900 million won in budget.

The city plans to secure the budget for the Gwangyang-eup Media Art and Sarasilye Art Village to Wine Cave Tourism Landmark Project as soon as possible and begin full-scale construction in January next year.

Lee Hyunju, Director of Tourism, stated, "With our selection in this contest, the projects to create a media art space connecting the Jeonnam Provincial Art Museum and Gwangyang Art Warehouse, as well as the tourism landmark project to build infrastructure between Sarasilye Art Village and the Gwangyang Wine Cave, have received a green light. We will creatively and efficiently develop unused state-owned railway idle land to create a global tourist city where citizens can enjoy their daily lives and tourists want to visit."
