Woman Recovers After Losing Consciousness at Guro Station Thanks to Emergency Aid
"A Helping Hand Comes First" ? A Heartwarming Story
A nursing student has warmed hearts by saving a woman who lost consciousness and collapsed in the subway through emergency first aid.
According to Yonhap News on September 23, at around 5:45 p.m. on September 17, a woman suddenly lost her balance and collapsed on the transfer footbridge at Guro Station in Seoul. Although there were many passersby during the evening rush hour, most simply walked by or watched without stepping in to help.
At that moment, someone approached the woman. It was Baek Youngseo, a 24-year-old third-year student in the Nursing Department at Bucheon University. Baek immediately checked the woman's consciousness and pulse, then loosened her top and helped her sit up to facilitate easier breathing. Baek stayed by her side for about 30 minutes, monitoring her condition. The woman eventually regained consciousness, expressed her gratitude, and left by train.
A citizen who witnessed the situation said, "Everyone assumed she was drunk and just looked on, but seeing the student's actions made me feel ashamed and deeply moved."
Baek explained, "People around thought she was intoxicated, but when I got closer, I saw her face was pale, she was sweating heavily, and her breathing was rough. As a nursing student, I thought, 'Maybe I am needed here.'" She added, "I was worried because I am still a student and don't have a license yet, but in that moment, helping her was the priority."
She said that thanks to recently taking classes on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems at school and completing basic life support (BLS) training, she was able to recall emergency procedures without panicking.
Baek recalled, "What stayed with me was when the woman held my hand tightly and said, 'Thank you. How can I repay you? What is your name?' Hearing those words made me relax and feel relieved."
She, who entered the Nursing Department because she wanted to save lives, said, "While studying, I realized that nurses are the ones who stay by patients' sides the longest. I want to become a nurse who is remembered as the most reliable presence for my patients."
