"Ishiba of Japan Coordinates Talks with Trump in U.S., Reaffirms Alliance Strengthening"

Kyodo News reported on September 22 that Shigeru Ishiba, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly, is coordinating a brief conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on September 23 (local time).


According to sources, Prime Minister Ishiba is considering attending a reception hosted by President Trump and the First Lady, where he is expected to have a conversation with President Trump.

Kyodo reported that at this event, Prime Minister Ishiba is expected to reaffirm the necessity for Japan and the United States to continue efforts to strengthen their alliance, even after his resignation. Having announced his intention to step down earlier this month, he will leave office after a new prime minister is elected in the National Diet following the ruling Liberal Democratic Party leadership election on October 4.


Prime Minister Ishiba is also finalizing arrangements to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.


Prime Minister Ishiba is scheduled to depart for New York, United States, on September 23 to attend the United Nations General Assembly and return to Japan on September 25.
