The National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on pending issues related to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn and remand President Lee Jaemyung's violation of the Public Official Election Act during his presidential candidacy, at 10 a.m. on September 30.
On September 22, during a full committee meeting, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, led by the Democratic Party of Korea, approved the plan to hold an "emergency hearing on suspicions of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Heedae's involvement in the presidential election" and the motion for the appearance of related witnesses and references.
Seo Youngkyo of the Democratic Party of Korea and other members of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, excluding members from the People Power Party, are blaming People Power Party members for the disruption of the prosecution reform hearing at the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 22nd at the National Assembly, demanding compliance with the National Assembly Advancement Act. The People Power Party protested by abstaining from the vote and leaving the meeting. However, the Democratic Party of Korea and the Rebuilding Korea Party expressed their support, and the motion was passed.
That day, Legislation and Judiciary Committee Chair Chu Mi-ae, Democratic Party committee secretary Kim Yongmin, and seven others requested and approved Chief Justice Cho Heedae, Supreme Court Justices Oh Kyungmi, Lee Heunggu, Lee Sukyeon, and Park Youngjae, as well as former Prime Minister Han Ducksoo, as witnesses. Kim Joo-ok, presiding judge at the Seoul Central District Court, Noh Haengnam, presiding judge at the Busan District Court Dongbu Branch, attorney Han Inseop, journalist Jeong Gyuje, and Professor Kim Seontaek were requested and approved as references.
During an alternative debate, Democratic Party lawmaker Seo Youngkyo stated, "The Supreme Court overturned and remanded President Lee's case in just one day. Can we trust a chief justice like this?" She added, "What kind of understanding did Yoon Sukyeol and the chief justice have? According to a tip I received, from the time he became chief justice, he said, 'If the Lee Jaemyung case comes to the Supreme Court, I will handle it accordingly.'"
Park Eunjeong, a lawmaker from the Rebuilding Korea Party, said, "Under Chief Justice Cho Heedae, the Supreme Court committed a judicial coup that undermined democracy and intervened in the presidential election. The National Assembly must question this on behalf of the people." She continued, "They must answer why they tried to eliminate a leading presidential candidate and why Cho Heedae, who is a 'friend of a friend' of Yoon Sukyeol, made Han Ducksoo run for president."
On the other hand, Na Kyungwon, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, who did not participate in the vote, held a press conference and, referring to the list of witnesses and references including Chief Justice Cho Heedae and Supreme Court justices, said, "This is a clear destruction of the judiciary." She emphasized, "By disguising this as a hearing, they are attempting to destroy the judiciary by summoning the chief justice in an unprecedented move in the constitutional history of Korea."
