At Jeongeup City Museum Until December 7
Jeongeup City in North Jeolla Province announced on September 22 that it will hold a special exhibition titled "Silent Teachings, Dalma," a retrospective of local painter and calligrapher Sogong Lee Myungwoo, at the Jeongeup City Museum from September 23 to December 7.
Sogong Lee Myungwoo was born in 1923 in Gammoe Village, Hwabong-ri, Gamgok-myeon, and studied Buddhist painting under the master monk Kim Ilseop. Beginning with an exhibition of Dalma paintings in Osaka, Japan in 1979, he actively showcased his work both in Korea and abroad, including at the National Museum of History in Taiwan and the opening invitational exhibition at the Korean Cultural Center in Japan.
His Dalma paintings are characterized by their gentle warmth and compassion, rather than authority or fear. Even within his bold brushstrokes, the warm gaze and steadfast yet benevolent expressions continue to resonate deeply with viewers today.
This exhibition features a total of 33 pieces, including works and painting tools preserved by his descendants. It is expected to serve as an opportunity to widely introduce the life and artistic world of this painter and calligrapher from Jeongeup.
Mayor Lee Haksoo stated, "This exhibition is an opportunity to experience the silent teachings that Sogong Lee Myungwoo captured on canvas throughout his life, and to feel the spirit of Jeongeup's painters and calligraphers up close. I hope many people will visit and enjoy the exhibition."
The Jeongeup City Museum is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 AM to 6 PM, except on Mondays when it is closed. For more information, please contact the Jeongeup City Museum.
