Ulsan District Court Sentences Defendant to Four Years and Six Months in Prison
A man in his 40s was sentenced to prison for wielding a weapon at his mother after being scolded by her. Despite being in serious condition after being stabbed, the mother did not go to the hospital immediately in an attempt to conceal her son's crime.
According to a report by Yonhap News Agency on September 21, the 11th Criminal Division of the Ulsan District Court (Presiding Judge Park Dongkyu) sentenced a man in his 40s, referred to as A, to four years and six months in prison on charges of attempted parricide.
Earlier this February, A was put on trial for allegedly cursing at and stabbing his mother, B, who is in her 60s, at their home in Ulsan in an attempt to kill her. At the time, A became angry and committed the crime after his mother scolded him when he asked her to prepare a table for drinking.
It was reported that about nine years ago, A had invested approximately 200 million won, which he had saved while working, in real estate through his mother but was defrauded, leading him to harbor resentment against her. Subsequently, he became addicted to online gambling, and after being fired from his job last year due to gambling issues, he began drinking frequently at home. Whenever his mother scolded him, A often assaulted or acted violently toward her while intoxicated, and at times even wielded a weapon.
Emergency surgery only performed two days after stabbing
At the time of the incident, B was stabbed in the abdomen but did not go to the hospital immediately out of fear that her son's crime would be discovered. Two days later, as her condition worsened, she was transported to the hospital by a 119 ambulance and underwent emergency surgery.
During the trial, A claimed diminished mental capacity, but the court did not accept this argument. The court explained the sentencing by stating, "The victim suffered serious injuries and aftereffects as a result of the defendant's crime," but also noted, "However, we considered the fact that the defendant fully admitted to the crime, that it appeared to be impulsive, and that there were no further attacks."
