On the 19th, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun held his first phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, which also served as an introductory call following his inauguration.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Araghchi remarked during the call that the two countries have maintained a friendly relationship over the years. Minister Cho agreed with this assessment and suggested that both sides continue to communicate closely.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the issue of reinstating sanctions against Iran, which is scheduled for a vote at the United Nations Security Council.
Minister Cho explained that, as the Security Council president for this month, South Korea has been proceeding with the necessary procedures in accordance with Security Council resolutions. He also expressed hope that, since the window for diplomacy remains open, all relevant countries will continue their efforts for a diplomatic resolution through dialogue and negotiation.
The two ministers agreed to seek a bilateral meeting in New York, United States, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week and other related occasions, in order to discuss bilateral relations and other matters.
