Lawmakers from the Democratic Party and the Party for Justice and Innovation, who are members of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee, have launched on-site investigations into KT and Lotte Card following large-scale hacking incidents.

On the afternoon of September 19, the lawmakers visited the KT Research and Development Headquarters in Seocho-gu, Seoul, where they emphasized the seriousness of the KT server breach and intensively questioned officials about the circumstances of the incident.

Attendees at the scene included KT CEO Kim Youngsub and other KT executives, Choi Woo-hyuk, Director of Information Security and Network Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, Lee Donggeun, Head of the Digital Threat Response Division at the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), and other relevant government officials.

The lawmakers received reports from KT regarding the status of consumer damages and response measures. They pressed KT on whether there were problems with the information security system and demanded explanations for alleged delayed responses by management and the disposal of the server for the on-premises remote consultation system.

Afterward, the lawmakers continued their on-site investigation at the Lotte Card headquarters in Jongno-gu. Kang Junhyeon, the ruling party secretary of the National Assembly’s Political Affairs Committee, and lawmaker Kim Namgeun also participated in the site visit.

Choi Minhee, Chair of the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee, stated, "The Lotte Card hacking incident is extremely serious. In particular, for 28 affected customers, not only personal information and card numbers but also two digits of the CVC security code-critical for transactions-were leaked, raising significant concerns about fraudulent use. We must urgently assess the actual situation."

Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Hyun commented, "Not only telecommunications companies but also card companies have experienced customer information leaks, heightening public anxiety. We must make thorough efforts to ensure that consumer rights are not violated."

Meanwhile, following this emergency on-site investigation, the committee plans to hold a hearing related to the hacking incidents on September 24. Three KT officials, including CEO Kim Youngsub, and two Lotte Card officials, including CEO Jo Jwajin, as well as Kim Byungju, chairman of MBK Partners, the largest shareholder of Lotte Card, have been summoned as witnesses for the hearing.
