Message Delivered on the 7th Anniversary of the Pyongyang Joint Declaration
"Historical Significance of Inter-Korean Agreements Must Be Remembered"
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, pledged on September 19, marking the 7th anniversary of the September 19 Pyongyang Joint Declaration, that Jeonnam Province would take the lead in overcoming the reality of 80 years of division and opening a new era of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.
In his message commemorating the 7th anniversary of the September 19 Pyongyang Joint Declaration, Governor Kim stated, "Together with all residents of the province, we reflect on the precious value of peace on the Korean Peninsula and the historical significance of that day."
He continued, "On September 19, 2018, in Pyongyang, the leaders of South and North Korea declared a Korean Peninsula without war and reached a comprehensive agreement covering denuclearization, military tension reduction, economic cooperation, reunions of separated families, and cultural and sports exchanges. Although implementation is currently suspended, new hope for peace is beginning to sprout again."
The Lee Jaemyung administration has designated peaceful coexistence and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula as a national policy goal, announced its intention to restore the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement in a proactive and phased manner, and immediately implemented measures to ease tensions, including halting the distribution of leaflets toward North Korea and suspending loudspeaker broadcasts.
Governor Kim stated, "Just as new buds sprout on branches that have endured a long winter, if we steadily build up efforts toward peace, the rigid inter-Korean relationship will also begin to thaw. Jeonnam Province will work together to open the path to peace on the Korean Peninsula. Centered around the Honam Region Unification Plus Center, we will focus on inter-Korean exchange and cooperation, support for North Korean defectors, and prepare to open channels for exchange in areas such as agriculture, fisheries, and culture and the arts."
