"Emergencies Signal the Beginning of Dictatorship"… Direct Criticism of President Lee
Expresses Concern Over "Political Tribunal" While Criticizing Special Bodies
Lee Junseok, leader of the Reform New Party, criticized President Lee Jaemyung, stating that he is "complacent in an emergency situation" and emphasized that democracy must return to normalcy.
On the 19th, Lee Junseok wrote on his social media, "Looking back at modern Korean history, those in power have always preferred emergencies over normal times," adding, "Emergencies have always signaled the beginning of dictatorship." He continued, "Just a few months ago, we witnessed yet another tragedy with the 12·3 Martial Law."
Regarding President Lee, he said, "Although he was elected as the one to resolve martial law, he is actually settling into the 'post-martial law emergency' framework," and criticized, "While boasting about the restoration of democracy externally, he has not let go of the 'emergency' for over 100 days internally."
He also raised the issue of double standards in the judicial system. Lee stated, "He claims it is justified to delay his own trial for years, but calls the seven-month trial of former President Yoon Sukyeol too long and declares an 'emergency,'" questioning, "Is this not hypocrisy?"
He further argued against the ruling bloc's proposal for a 'special investigative body' and a 'special tribunal,' stating, "Just as the Japanese colonial regime controlled Koreans with military police who had summary judgment authority, these special bodies bypass the judiciary in normal times to suppress the opposition." He warned, "The special tribunal that the president desires would eliminate differences of opinion among judges and turn the court into a political body that decides guilt or innocence based on political bias," adding, "I hope the convenience of emergencies does not seep into the prefrontal cortex."
In conclusion, he emphasized, "President Yoon Sukyeol, even after losing the general election, became addicted to veto power and ultimately drank the poison chalice of martial law. President Lee Jaemyung must be different." He added, "The people chose you to escape the fear of martial law, not to be trapped in another emergency. Now is the time to return to normalcy."
