President Lee Jaemyung declared six towns and townships under the jurisdiction of Muan County and Hampyeong County in South Jeolla Province as special disaster zones at 8 p.m. on September 18, following the damage caused by heavy rainfall, according to a written briefing by presidential spokesperson Kang Yujeong.
When an area is designated as a special disaster zone, additional national funds are provided for disaster recovery. Residents in the affected areas also receive support such as deferred payment of national and local taxes and reductions in public utility charges.
Spokesperson Kang conveyed that President Lee requested, "Relevant ministries should finalize recovery plans as soon as possible," and urged officials to "pay close attention to ensure that residents in the affected areas can quickly return to their daily lives."
These regions, which have recently experienced heavy rainfall, have reported numerous cases of flooding and power outages affecting residents.
