Reports have emerged that the governments of South Korea and Japan are coordinating to hold a summit between President Lee Jae-myung and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Busan at the end of this month, as Prime Minister Ishiba is planning to visit South Korea.
On September 18, the Mainichi Shimbun of Japan reported this information, citing diplomatic sources. Prime Minister Ishiba, who previously announced his resignation, has been seeking to visit South Korea at the end of the month to strengthen shuttle diplomacy.
The discussion of Busan as the venue for the summit is seen as a response to President Lee's suggestion during his visit to Japan on August 23-24. At that time, President Lee proposed, "I would like to meet somewhere in a region of South Korea other than Seoul."
Kyodo News also reported, citing sources, that Prime Minister Ishiba is coordinating a visit to Busan from September 30 to October 1.
