Google has unveiled a new protocol that enables artificial intelligence (AI) agents to make payments.
According to TechCrunch, an information technology (IT) media outlet, Google Cloud released the "Agent Payment Protocol (AP2)" on September 17 (local time), which outlines the basic rules for AI-based payments.
AP2 is a technology that enables the development of AI services with automated payment and remittance capabilities. It establishes a common set of rules allowing AI to safely shop on behalf of users. More than 60 financial institutions participated in developing this protocol, which enables AI agents to make payments on behalf of customers across multiple platforms. By extending existing payment frameworks such as credit cards and bank transfers, it also supports a variety of payment methods, including stablecoins.
Google stated that it has ensured authentication and accountability when AI agents make payments. The protocol is also designed to guarantee interoperability among AI platforms, payment systems, and merchants, and to leave a record of each transaction for tracking purposes.
For example, if a user asks a chatbot agent to prepare for a cycling trip, the agent can immediately suggest a time-limited bundle offer. If the user simply enters the date, location, and budget for a weekend trip, the agent can interact with airlines, hotels, online travel agencies, and booking platforms to find combinations that fit the budget, then simultaneously execute cryptographically signed bookings for flights and accommodations.
AP2 allows for fully automated payments, where the AI can proceed with payment immediately after finding a product that meets the specified conditions, without requiring additional user confirmation. However, in such cases, specific instructions such as price limits, purchase timing, and detailed rules are required, and all transactions are recorded to enable post-payment verification.
Google stated, "We will continue to develop this protocol through an open and collaborative process, including standardization bodies," and added, "We invite the entire payments and technology community to help build this future together."
