Academic Symposium to Mark the 10th Anniversary of the Bonghwang-dong Site Excavation
The National Gaya Cultural Heritage Research Institute under the National Heritage Administration will open the complex cultural space 'Re.Gaya' on September 24 at the National Gaya History and Culture Center in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do. The following day, an academic symposium will be held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the excavation of the Bonghwang-dong site in Gimhae, known as the royal fortress of Geumgwan Gaya.
The Gaya Center, which opened last year, has established itself as a hub for Gaya history materials by collecting and researching excavation records, donated books, and non-designated cultural heritage items. The newly opened 'Re.Gaya' is a complex cultural platform designed to share these achievements with the public. As reflected in its name, which means 'again (Re),' the space aims to encourage a renewed remembrance of Gaya.
The exhibition area consists of several sections: the 'Open Storage,' which will display Gaya earthenware kept in storage for over 30 years for the first time; the 'Archaeologist's Room,' featuring excavation drawings and photographs; the 'Bookstore,' which houses donated books; and the 'Terrace,' a relaxation area.
On September 25, an academic symposium titled 'Excavation, Records, and Science: Diverse Perspectives on the Bonghwang-dong Site in Gimhae' will be held at the Gaya Center auditorium. The morning session will focus on literature and excavation achievements, while the afternoon will present scientific findings, including GIS analysis, sedimentary environments, radiocarbon dating, faunal and floral remains, and conservation science. Professor Kwon Oyong of Seoul National University will serve as moderator and deliver a comprehensive commentary.
The National Gaya Cultural Heritage Research Institute stated, "We aim to develop the Gaya Center into a cultural hub that connects future generations with the values of Gaya," adding, "We will also strengthen research and preservation management systems for Gaya history, including the Bonghwang-dong site."
