Samsudong Food Street to Be Reborn as a Stay-Type Tourism Commercial District
Taebaek City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Lee Sangho) announced on September 17 that it has been finally selected for the '2026 Commercial District Revitalization Project' hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. The city will carry out a project totaling 6.27 billion won, including private capital, over five years from 2026 to 2030.
This selection is the result of proactive support from National Assemblyman Lee Cheolgyu, close cooperation with Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and the city's thorough advance preparations. The city plans to foster a stay-type tourism commercial district centered around the Samsudong Food Street, linking it with major tourist attractions such as Hwangji Pond and Taebaeksan National Park.
The main initiatives include commercial district branding, development of specialized content utilizing local culture and tourism resources, improvement of the commercial district environment, and strengthening merchant capabilities through management consulting. The city aims to establish a sustainable commercial district model in which local merchants and visitors can grow together.
This project goes beyond simply revitalizing the commercial district. Its goals include job creation, preventing population outflow, and invigorating the local economy. The city seeks to transform the commercial district into a community-centered space that embodies local culture and identity.
A Taebaek City official stated, "Being selected for this commercial district revitalization project has laid the foundation for the local commercial district's resurgence," adding, "We will accelerate the project so that Samsudong Food Street can develop into an attractive commercial district where tourists want to stay longer."
