Tourism Revitalization Programs Launched
Attracting Autumn Visitors to Sancheong
In March of this year, Sancheong County lost its spring to a massive wildfire, and then, in July, it was hit by extreme heavy rains, resulting in another quiet autumn. On top of this, the local economy has suffered as tourists, feeling that it is inappropriate to visit disaster-stricken areas, have stayed away.
This year, Sancheong County in South Gyeongsang Province had planned to revitalize the region by promoting the Year of Visiting Sancheong. However, due to two unexpected major disasters, festivals and events were canceled or scaled down, causing the tourism industry to come to a temporary halt.
Nevertheless, the forests of Sancheong are sprouting new shoots, clear water has returned to the valleys, and local residents are joining hands and standing together as they work to return to their daily lives.
In response, Sancheong County is launching a variety of programs to attract autumn tourists under the slogan "Travel to Sancheong." The county will first resume its flagship tourism event, the "Stay One Night in Sancheong" program.
If two or more tourists stay for at least one night, half of their travel expenses will be reimbursed in local gift certificates. The program received a great response during its previous run, and this autumn, it will be expanded to benefit even more visitors.
The county is also bringing back the Wellness Metropolitan City Tour, targeting tourists from the Seoul metropolitan area. The tour offers both one-day and overnight options, allowing visitors to easily tour major attractions such as Donguibogam Village and Namsa Yedam Village without any inconvenience related to transportation or routes.
Currently, an outdoor theater troupe called Geukdan Keundeul is holding regular performances at Donguibogam Village. In addition, in November, a hands-on tourism program called "Donguibogam Village Immortality Expedition" will welcome family tourists.
At the Gisan Gugak Center in Namsa Yedam Village, fusion Korean traditional music performances are held every Saturday. At the end of October, a poetry exhibition along the stone wall path, featuring participation by local seniors, will be held alongside a variety of experiences, a flea market, and performances.
At the Wonji riverside in Sinan-myeon, a flea market prepared by local youth will connect tourists with residents, and various programs combining culture, art, and hands-on experiences will be offered throughout Sancheong.
County Governor Lee Seunghwa said, "This autumn, the mountains, valleys, and villages of Sancheong are fully prepared to welcome tourists with renewed energy. Sancheong is more than just a travel destination; it is a special place where nature, people, and stories of recovery come together. We hope to offer visitors the power of healing and restoration."
He added, "Every step taken in Sancheong is a great comfort and encouragement to our residents. I hope many people will visit Sancheong, where you can meet warm-hearted people, breathe fresh air, and experience the healing and recovery that only nature can provide."
