The city of Busan and the Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion (BISTEP) will hold an awards ceremony for the "Outstanding Research and Development Achievements in the Busan Region in 2025" at the opening ceremony of the 11th Busan R&D Week, which will take place on September 25.
The "Outstanding Research and Development Achievements in the Busan Region" have been selected annually since 2018 to promote the spread of scientific and technological culture and encourage continuous contributions to research and development innovation activities within the region.
This year, out of 41 achievements submitted by local researchers, a selection evaluation committee composed of experts from various scientific and technological fields reviewed the entries based on criteria such as creativity and challenge, qualitative excellence, and regional impact, ultimately selecting eight achievements as the final winners.
This year's awards consist of two in the Research Innovation category, two in the Industrial Promotion category, and four in the Excellence in Academic Achievement category, totaling eight awards. The Busan Mayor's Award will be presented in the Research Innovation and Industrial Promotion categories, while the President of BISTEP Award and a Dongbaekjeon gift card worth 1 million won will be presented in the Excellence in Academic Achievement category.
The Research Innovation category winners are: ▲ Development of non-contact stimulus-responsive biomimetic smart materials and intelligent structural control technology (Professor Kim Chaebin, Pusan National University), and ▲ Development of functional raw materials using lactic acid bacteria-fermented oyster extract derived from domestic marine oyster materials (CEO Lee Baejin, Marine Bio Process).
The Industrial Promotion category winners are: ▲ Development of a hemispherical overtopping reduction facility using drainage-type Tycell technology for flood and typhoon response (CEO Kim Sangki, Uju), and ▲ Development of a world-class AI-based high-speed defect detection vision system (Professor Choi Yunho, Pusan National University). The Excellence in Academic Achievement category winners are: ▲ First development of quantum annealing-based ship allocation problem-solving technology (Integrated Master's and Doctoral Program Student Jung Seongeun, Pusan National University), ▲ Development of all-solid-state oxygen storage technology at room temperature and atmospheric pressure (PhD Candidate Oh Changyeop, Korea Maritime and Ocean University), ▲ Development of smart ON/OFF pressure-sensitive adhesive (Integrated Master's and Doctoral Program Student Choi Subi, Pusan National University), and ▲ Research on the treatment of radioactive contaminated water for simultaneous removal of high concentrations of multiple nuclides based on hydrate crystallization (Postdoctoral Researcher Seo Seongdeok, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology).
Prior to the awards ceremony, the pre-event for the 11th Busan R&D Week will feature presentations of the four achievements receiving the Busan Mayor's Award. In addition, from September 17 to 26, a poster exhibition showcasing all eight outstanding achievements will be held at the event venue and in the subway passage at Busan City Hall Station.
