First Public Swimming Pool in Eastern Yongsan
Online Priority Registration for District Residents Begins September 23
Yongsan District in Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) has completed facility improvement work at the Itaewon Elementary School Swimming Pool (19, Noksapyeong-daero 40-gil) and will begin recruiting new members starting from September 23.
The available programs are diverse, including swimming (group lessons, small group lessons, free swimming, elementary swimming), aquarobics, equipment pilates, and circuit fit, among others. Registration is conducted exclusively online through the Integrated Reservation Website for the Culture and Sports Center.
Under the new “Resident Priority Registration System” for public sports facilities, which was implemented this month, only Yongsan residents can register on September 23. From September 24, other residents, including those who work in Yongsan District, may also apply.
The Itaewon Elementary School Swimming Pool is the first public swimming pool in the eastern part of Yongsan, created by renovating the school’s multi-purpose facility (Education & Culture Center). The total area is 2,259.63 square meters, with the first basement level housing the swimming pool and auxiliary facilities (1,170.96 square meters), and the second basement level containing the parking lot and mechanical room (1,088.67 square meters). The swimming pool features six 25-meter lanes and has a capacity of 100 people. Although officially listed as a basement facility, natural light enters through windows.
Auxiliary facilities include a children's pool, showers, restrooms, equipment pilates room, and GX room. The parking lot has 17 spaces and is available exclusively to facility users. The district applied universal design principles during renovations by eliminating door thresholds and expanding the lobby area for greater comfort. The GX room features a full glass wall to enhance openness.
The Yongsan District Facilities Management Corporation will operate the facility. Yongsan District stated, “Compared to when a private company operated the pool, residents can now enjoy exercise at about 40% lower cost. With budget support from the Central District Office of Education, which manages school property, all outdated mechanical equipment has been replaced. We will do our best to improve resident satisfaction in terms of water quality, safety, and facility management.”
The Itaewon Elementary School Swimming Pool first opened in 2007 as a multi-purpose school facility. This project was promoted as part of the 8th popularly elected district mayor’s pledge to expand infrastructure for daily sports. In addition, the district is working to expand sports facilities in various ways. Including seven facilities donated through redevelopment and reconstruction, Yongsan plans to establish 17 additional public sports facilities by 2035.
The swimming pool’s completion ceremony will be held on October 2 at 9:30 a.m. The event will be attended by Park Hee-young, District Mayor of Yongsan, Kwon Young-se, National Assemblyman, Kang Sam-gu, Superintendent of the Seoul Central District Office of Education, Jang Jin-hye, Principal of Seoul Itaewon Elementary School, parent representatives, and about 100 others.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan District, said, “We actively promoted the improvement of Itaewon Elementary School facilities to contribute to the expansion of public sports facilities in eastern Yongsan, improve the educational environment, and enhance residents’ leisure activities. As registration is prioritized for district residents, I encourage those interested to apply on the appropriate date.”
