The Open Tourism Site Development Project is an initiative to renovate tourist destinations so that everyone, including people with disabilities, the elderly, and families with infants, can enjoy tourism without inconvenience or restrictions in mobility.
Chuncheon City was selected for a public contest organized last year by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, and has since promoted the creation of open tourism sites at three locations: Kim Yu-jeong Rail Bike, Samaksan Cable Car, and the Animation Museum. The total project cost was 1.5 billion won, including 750 million won in national funds and 375 million won in provincial funds.
At Kim Yu-jeong Rail Bike, rail bikes that allow wheelchair users to board without transferring have been introduced. At Samaksan Lake Cable Car, facilities such as restrooms for people with disabilities and stations have been improved, while at the Animation Museum, barrier-free content has been enhanced, including digital sensory experience facilities.
With the completion of the Open Tourism Site Development Project to create a barrier-free tourism environment, Chuncheon City, the Korea Tourism Organization, and the disabled people's group Nanum Travel Group held a completion ceremony on the 16th at the outdoor stage of Kim Yu-jeong Rail Bike. The ceremony featured a celebratory performance by the performance team Sonullim, composed of people with developmental disabilities, as well as experience events with the companion rail bike that allows wheelchair boarding and the Romantic Train equipped with a wheelchair lift.
Previously, since 2019, Chuncheon City has continued the open tourism site project, starting with four locations: Nami Island, King Canoe Ferry Terminal, Soyanggang Skywalk, and Dr. Village Glamping Site. In 2025, Legoland and Kim Yu-jeong Literature Village were also selected for the public contest, further establishing Chuncheon as a leading model city for open tourism sites nationwide.
A Chuncheon City official stated, "Chuncheon is taking a step forward as an inclusive city that guarantees the right to enjoy tourism for all citizens, based on consideration and respect," adding, "As a city visited by many, we will do our best to create a tourism environment where everyone can enjoy themselves without inconvenience."
