This briefing session was organized to explain the current status of the Ulleung Airport construction project, which is the largest national project on Ulleungdo and is being built with the goal of completion in 2027 and opening in the first half of 2028, as well as to outline various safety measures that will be applied to Ulleung Airport in the future.
The event was attended by officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Airport Construction Team, which is overseeing the Ulleung Airport construction, as well as representatives from the Busan Regional Office of Aviation, which is the ordering agency, Korea Airports Corporation, DL E&C (the construction company), and Korea Engineering Consultants Corp. (the supervisory company). From Ulleung County, Governor Nam Hankwon, council members Choi Byungho and Hong Seonggeun, members of the Ulleung Airport Runway Extension Promotion Committee, and many Ulleung County residents interested in the project were present.
The briefing session proceeded in the following order: a report on the progress of the Ulleung Airport construction project, communication plans with residents regarding the project, a representative statement from the Ulleung Airport Runway Extension Promotion Committee, and a Q&A session covering the overall safety and construction of Ulleung Airport.
During the session, in-depth discussions were held on the necessity of extending the Ulleung Airport runway, the review of proposals to expand the runway end safety area, and the possibility of converting to instrument flight operations, all focusing on the safety of the currently ongoing Ulleung Airport construction.
Governor Nam Hankwon stated, "I would like to express my deep gratitude to the officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Busan Regional Office of Aviation for organizing this Visiting Ulleung Airport Construction Project Resident Briefing Session." He added, "Going forward, Ulleung County will continue to work closely with relevant organizations for the safe construction of Ulleung Airport and will actively communicate the voices of residents regarding airport safety to the central government, doing our utmost to ensure the safe completion of Ulleung Airport."
