Spreading the Value of UNESCO World Natural Heritage
Synergy Expected with IUCN Partnership and Tidal Flat Festival
Boseong County in South Jeolla Province (Governor Kim Cheolwoo) announced on September 16 that it will designate the 'Alakkkorimadoyo' as the flagship species of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat at a special stage in Jangyang Fishing Village Experience Village at 11:10 a.m. on September 20.
The Alakkkorimadoyo is a Class II endangered migratory waterbird that travels between Asia and Australia, using the Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat as a key stopover. The county plans to designate it as a flagship species (a plant or animal that represents the local ecosystem) to publicly express its commitment to the conservation of the tidal flat both domestically and internationally.
On the same day, the county will sign a work agreement with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and expand the foundation for international cooperation by conducting endangered species surveys, building an international expert network, and promoting resident-participatory ecological education.
More than 1,000 people, including academic experts, fishermen, and residents, are expected to attend the event. There will also be a tidal flat photography exhibition and performances by local singers, further enriching the message of ecological conservation.
Governor Kim Cheolwoo stated, "The declaration of a flagship species is our county's promise to protect the tidal flat for future generations," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that the Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat becomes an ecological tourism hub that goes beyond being a simple experience space and is preserved together with the international community."
Meanwhile, the proclamation ceremony will be held in conjunction with the opening of the '2025 Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat Festival' on the same day, making it a special occasion where tourists and residents can share both the enjoyment and the conservation value of the tidal flat.
