Ricky Hatton Found Dead at Home
Just Two Months After Announcing Comeback
Ricky Hatton, the legendary British boxer who twice claimed world champion titles, has died at the age of 47.
According to international media outlets such as the BBC, Ricky Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, on the morning of the 14th (local time). Police responded to a resident's report at around 6:45 a.m. and discovered Hatton, stating that there were no suspicious circumstances or signs of crime. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
Nicknamed the "Hitman," Hatton became the World Boxing Association (WBA) world champion in both the light welterweight and welterweight divisions by defeating Kostya Tszyu in 2005 and Jose Luis Castillo in 2007. His professional career record stands at 48 fights, 45 wins (32 by knockout), and 3 losses.
Before suffering his first defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007, Hatton had achieved 43 consecutive wins and was regarded as one of the best boxers of his era. His final professional bout took place in 2012 against Vyacheslav Senchenko.
After retirement, Hatton openly shared that he struggled with depression, alcohol and drug addiction, and even attempted to take his own life. Known for his down-to-earth personality and sense of humor, he built a devoted fan base and remained a star representing British boxing.
Hatton recently announced a comeback after 13 years and was preparing for a match against Isa Al Dhawi in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, this December. The boxing world was left in shock by the sudden news of his death just two months before his planned return.
In a statement, the WBA mourned, "He was a true champion and a boxing legend who demonstrated indomitable spirit. His legacy will be remembered forever." British champion Amir Khan said, "We have lost the best British boxer, a friend, and a mentor," while Tyson Fury, Ellie Scotney, and others also expressed their condolences.
