Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) announced a new leap toward the future of peace and unification by opening the Gyeonggi Region Unification Plus Center on the 15th.

Located on the site of the returned U.S. military base, Camp La Guardia, the Gyeonggi Region Unification Plus Center is a facility established to promote reconciliation between North and South Korea and to foster greater understanding of unification. Through the Unification Plus Center, the city plans to provide peace and unification education for citizens and to broaden understanding of North Korean defectors and a culture of inter-Korean coexistence through various hands-on experiences and exhibitions.
More than 50 people attended the opening ceremony, including Minister of Unification Jeong Dongyoung, Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dongyeon, Uijeongbu Mayor Kim Donggeun, members of the National Assembly and Provincial Assembly, officials from related organizations, and North Korean defectors. The event featured a cultural performance before the ceremony, a ribbon-cutting, a commemorative performance, a signing ceremony for business agreements, and a tour of the exhibition and experience center.
The center houses a Peace Lounge, an exhibition and experience center, a shared meeting room, and offices. The facility, which consists of one basement floor and three above-ground floors, is open to the public for easy access. The exhibition hall is filled with a variety of content that provides an overview of inter-Korean exchanges and the unification process.
On this day, Mayor Kim Donggeun also presented Governor Kim Dongyeon with key proposals for the development of Uijeongbu.
The main points included: ▲ Priority allocation of industrial capacity for the creation of an advanced industrial complex on the returned U.S. military base site; ▲ Cooperation for the development of the area around Uijeongbu Station to establish it as a transportation and economic hub for northern Gyeonggi Province; ▲ Prompt determination of the operator for Jangam Station on Subway Line 7 to improve the metropolitan transportation network and enhance citizen convenience; and ▲ Provincial funding support for improvements in the frequently flooded section of Nokyang Intersection. Mayor Kim presented tasks spanning industry, transportation, and safety, and requested active interest and support from Gyeonggi Province.

Mayor Kim Donggeun stated, "Uijeongbu has long stood at the forefront of security and the military, but now it must transform into a future city where peace and the economy coexist. Centered around the Unification Plus Center, we will fulfill our role as a key city in northern Gyeonggi Province and, together with Gyeonggi Province, create a cooperative model befitting the era of the peace economy."
