The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on September 15 that Jaehun Cha, an attorney at Hwawoo Law Firm (age 62, 28th National Judicial Examination), has been appointed as the first Permanent Representative to the United Nations under the Lee Jaemyung administration. Cha previously served as the defense attorney for President Lee in the 2020 case regarding violations of the Public Official Election Act, when Lee was the Governor of Gyeonggi Province.
Ambassador Cha is a graduate of Suncheon High School in Jeonnam and the Department of Law at Seoul National University. He earned a Master of Laws from American University Law School in the United States. He passed the 28th National Judicial Examination and completed the 18th Judicial Research and Training Institute, making him a peer of President Lee in both the exam and the institute.
He has been active in Lawyers for a Democratic Society, and has served as a legal advisor for KBS Broadcasting, a member of the Human Rights Committee of the National Police Agency, an international human rights specialist at the National Human Rights Commission, a legal advisor on international investment disputes at the Ministry of Justice, a global legal advisor for the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation, and an international arbitrator at the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board.
The position of Permanent Representative to the United Nations does not require the agr?ment (prior diplomatic consent) process, so the appointment takes effect immediately. Ambassador Cha is expected to make his international debut at the 80th United Nations General Assembly high-level session in New York on September 23, which President Lee will attend.
