Gwangju City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on September 15 that it will temporarily suspend parking enforcement and open 11 paid public parking lots free of charge during the Chuseok holiday period to boost the local economy and provide convenience for returning visitors.
According to the city, parking enforcement will be suspended for 13 days from September 27 to October 9 in the areas around Gyeongan Market and Gonjiam Market, as these locations are expected to see a surge in visitors during the Chuseok peak season.
In addition, parking enforcement will be temporarily suspended for seven days from October 3 to October 9 at 334 designated no-parking zones throughout Gwangju City.
However, the following areas, which are strictly prohibited for parking and stopping, are excluded from this suspension: within 5 meters of fire hydrants, within 5 meters of intersections, within 10 meters of bus stops, crosswalks, children's protection zones, sidewalks and bridges, and tunnels. The city has urged citizens not to park or stop their vehicles in these areas.
During the suspension period, the city will focus on guidance and education to ensure smooth traffic flow. Meanwhile, the 'resident reporting system,' which allows fines to be imposed without on-site confirmation by enforcement officials, will continue to operate as usual for strictly prohibited parking and stopping zones.
Additionally, to ease traffic congestion around the markets, the city will open 11 paid public parking lots (Gyeongan-dong, Gyeongan Market, Yeok-dong, Sangbeoncheon, Gonjiam Drainage Pump Station, Gwangju Station Area, Songjeong-dong Village, Gyeongan Drainage Pump Station, Yangbeol-dong, Patriotic Veterans Park, and Gonjiam No. 1 Public Parking Lot) free of charge for seven days from October 3 to October 9.
Mayor Bang Sehwan stated, "By temporarily suspending parking enforcement and opening public parking lots free of charge during the Chuseok holiday, we hope to provide parking convenience to citizens and returning visitors, contribute to revitalizing local businesses, and help stabilize livelihoods. We ask everyone to actively participate in voluntarily maintaining parking order so that all can enjoy a comfortable holiday."
