According to the IT industry on September 15, Samsung Electronics is expected to release its dual-folding "Trifold" smartphone in select countries as early as next month.

The device’s most notable feature is its display, which is divided into three sections and folds inward from both sides. The external screen is a 6.49-inch display that provides essential functions, but when fully unfolded, it expands to a 10-inch screen, significantly enhancing multitasking capabilities.

The application processor (AP), which serves as the smartphone’s brain, is expected to be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, paired with One UI 8, Samsung’s latest operating system based on Android 16. This combination of cutting-edge hardware and intuitive software will enable smooth operation of various generative AI tasks and content streaming, while also ensuring that battery life and efficiency are not compromised during multitasking with multiple apps.

The new Trifold phone is expected to be launched as part of the Galaxy Z series. In July, Samsung filed trademark applications for the names "Galaxy Z TriFold" and "Z TriFold" with the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

However, with a launch price expected to range from 2,000 to 3,500 dollars (approximately 2.78 million to 4.87 million Korean won), industry consensus is that it will be difficult for the device to become a mainstream product. Samsung’s launch of the Trifold smartphone is seen as an effort to counter Chinese manufacturers, who are rapidly increasing their market share in the foldable phone segment, and to maintain its status by showcasing advanced technology.

An IT industry official stated, "It will be released in limited quantities in countries where there is a strong preference for premium phones," adding, "This product is targeted at early adopters who want to experience the latest foldable phones."

Meanwhile, Huawei of China, which introduced the world's first Trifold phone last year, unveiled its next-generation Trifold phone, the "Mate XTs," earlier this month, signaling a new round of competition with Samsung.
